Geoffrey Wellum was born on August 4, 1921 in Walthamstow, London, England as Geoffrey Harry Augustus Wellum. He was a writer, known for Witness 1939: When War Broke Out (2014), Battle of Britain (2015) and First Light (2010).

He retired from the RAF in 1960 and went on to write a best selling memoir in ‘First Light’. Geoffrey Wellum My interview with Squadron Leader Geoffrey Wellum DFC was one of the first I ever did with a veteran of the war. I’ve posted a piece about meeting him and the publication of his memoir, First Light, on Talking Point, but here is the transcript of the conversation we had in his local pub back in February 2001.

He was married to Grace Neil. He died on July 18, 2018 in the UK. Geoffrey Harris Augustus Wellum was born in Walthamstow, on London’s eastern edge, on 4 August 1921.

Geoffrey Wellum: One of the Few Geoffrey Wellum once joked that his life had "peaked" at the age of 21. In 1939, when he was just 18 years old, he had joined the RAF on a short-service mission. During his time at No. 92 Squadron, Kingcome became acquainted with Geoffrey Wellum. Wellum, who flew as wingman to Flight Lieutenant Brian Kingcome, 92 Squadron's acting CO (the Squadron lost 2 new COs within days of their arrival and Brian Kingcome led the Squadron temporarily in the absence of a squadron commander) later recorded his experiences in the book First Light . In the early 1970s Geoffrey Wellum was at a very low ebb. His business had failed, his marriage was coming to an end and he had recently lost his house.
